Dear Kozloski, Carfixer, Jeff Compton and all,
Good to be back to chat. This time it's my wife's car:
2002 Ford Mustang Coupe vin IFAFP40432Fxxxxxx, 3.8L V6, auto transmission, air conditioning, power steering, power package(W,L,M,D)
The engine has a LOUD squeek coming from the engine compartment usually very pronounced at start up, then it sorta goes away and comes back. A few weeks ago the engine died while my wife was driving it, but started up and she drove it home. According to her, it's been getting worse. It sounds like a metal component is loose and is rubbing next to another metal component to cause the squeek. I did the stethoscope screwdriver to the ear test and determined that the noise was from the water pump. I replaced the water pump. The loud squeek is still there, although I could here the noise in the water pump when my screwdriver was pressed against the body of the pump. I checked all pulleys and they are all fine. The serpentine belt is replaced. Overall, the engine has been kept clean and regular maintenance performed at the dealership. Today, I took it to Autozone to have the codes read as "check engine soon" has come on and the hand-held reader displayed "P1285 Manufacturer Cntrl, Fuel Air Metering". I had the guy print off my codes from the reader and it says, "Troubleshooting P1285, OEM Brand: Ford, Definition-Cylinder head over temperature condition. Explanation-ECM detected the cylinder head temperature was above safe limits. Probable Cause-1.-Engine overheated, 2.-Open or shorted circuit condition, 3.-Failed Cylinder Head Temperature sensor.
The engine did get very hot while running it to replace lost coolant after the water pump replacement and that may be the reason for this code. The loud squeek is not affected by engine speed. You can accelerate, shift gears, turn corners, brake hard, turn the A/C on and off and the squeek remains relatively the same. I've checked for loose components and can't find anything. Will you guys think about this and give me a hand? Your advice is very much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Dear Kozloski, Maybe it was implied and not simply stated, but the squeeking is what makes the engine run rough and stall out. The engine finally threw a code. I always thought that the assistance you and others freely give to people on this site is to be commended and jealously admired, so I don't waste your time by just jumping in here without trying EVERYTHING I can think of, first. Kozloski, your attempt to humor me is about as funny as the thought of my wife breaking down on a dark street late at night.
This site used to be the best in my opinion, and the only one I would consult. But, maybe it isn't the site it used to be. Thank you anyway. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Is this squeak intermittant or steady? Is it a long tone or a repeated squeak, squeak, squeak? Could it be a whistle like a vacuum leak? Spray some starting fluid or BrakeKlean around the intake and vacuum hoses while it's running and see if it makes a difference. It ought to speed up or slow down if it sucks the spray in through a hole or crack.

Dear Kozloski and all, Thank you for your input. I ended up taking the Mustang to the shop since nothing I could think of nor what you suggested seemed to find the squeek. Turns out that this squeek is common on the Ford 3.8l V6 (mine is at 90,000 miles). It's the camshaft position sensor. It sits right behind the water pump smack dab dead center front of the engine with an electrical connection. So, with the "screwdriver to the ear stethoscope test" you can and do get a transferrance of squeek through to the water pump(and think the water pump is bad) it is actually the camshaft position sensor or sometimes called the camshaft syncronizer. Yeah, I replaced my water pump and probably didn't have to. The camshaft position sensor costs about 20-60 bucks at Checker Auto Parts and is easy to replace, you just need to align it like you would a timing belt, etc. The shop charged me about $150 taxes, incidentals, etc. included and only took them a couple of hours. No more CEL and the pony runs great again. Thanks again for your help and patience Kozloski. Merry CHRISTMAS and a Happy New Year to all of us. God Bless.
