I have a 2001 Maxima I have been fighting to get rid of p0171 (Bank 1 too lean) code. I’ve replaced the maf, o2’s on that bank, etc and am still getting the code. Any help is appreciated.

After investing in a scanner I get the following freeze frame:

Fuel Trim Status
Short-Term Fuel Trim (Bank 1) : 0.00 %
Short-Term Fuel Trim (Bank 2) : 14.06 %
Long-Term Fuel Trim (Bank 1) : -3.13 %
Long-Term Fuel Trim (Bank 2) : 3.91 %
Fuel System Status
Fuel System 1 Status : Open loop due to detected system fault.
Fuel System 2 Status : Closed Loop

I’ve searched and searched but am confused about the open loop system fault. Does this mean specifically that one of the new o2’s isn’t working or just that there is something in bank 1 (vacuum leak, etc) not right?

Any wisdom is appreciated. Thanks.

Check for a vacuum leak(s) or unmetered air getting into the engine as well as fuel pressure.

Does your freeze frame record coolant temperature?

Maybe the code was set when the engine was still code or did you install aftermarket O2s as opposed to dealer ones?
