My check engine light has been coming for past 3 weeks. The error codes are always P0420.Once I also got the P0300 ( misfire) I did the major service maintanence yesterday at a local Toy dealer for about $250 but that didnt fix the problem ( I was assuming changing the spark plugs might help P0420 but looks like the P0300 is gone ). I checked and the code mentions "Catalyst efficiency below threshold in Bank 1). Anyone got this before and how did you fix it? I am scared I will be poorer by a few more dollars. I have a 99 4 cyl Camry.. IP: Logged |

This refers to your catalytic converter located on the exhaust system. This can possibly be a problem with one of the 2 oxygen sensors used to evaluate catalytic converter performance, but that is unlikely. Most likely the converter itself is not able to pass the onboard test. Misfire will usually contribute to deterioration of the catalyst. Having an inefficient catalyst will not really affect driveability. The repair could be put off until you can afford it. The catalyst is strictly an emissions control device. The OBDII system is designed to protect the catalyst due to its high cost. This is why you should fix problems soon when the check engine light comes on. Sorry for the sermon. IP: Logged |

Thanks Dave ! I am in CA. Do you know if the catalyst is covered for extended time under CA emission warranty ? IP: Logged |

check you owners manual-i believe cat converters and PCMs are covered up to 8 years/80000 miles due to a federal requirement, CA may be even stricter IP: Logged |

quote: That's true BUT, the Dealership may (if learning of the misfire code) deny the warranty claim of the converter failure stating it was caused by a "non-covered item" such as plugs, wires, etc... IP: Logged |

Problem ( checked with Toy dealer). 1)Both ( 2) oxygen sensors ( air/fuel ratio sensor ) damaged. Since I changed one o2 sensor last year in jun I am out of warranty on both since its past 1 yr 2)Catalytic convertor damaged - Under warranty since its been less than 8 yrs. Will be replaced free of charge. So I have to pay $441 for the two oxygen sensors and its installation labor IP: Logged |

You can always ask if there's any "overlapping time" between the 2 operations. Long shot=they might install the sensors for free if you buy the parts there? IP: Logged |

looks like this is what happened. your upstream O2 sensors were bad or getting there, in the mean time, your cat. was dieing as well from the faulty O2's. (an O2 sensor that is badly degraded may continue to function well enough not to set a fault code — but not well enough to prevent an increase in emissions and fuel consumption.) then eventually you got the 0420 becuase of a burnt cat. i am not sure, but i am beginning to believe that when refering to the catalytic converter, bank 1 means single exhaust (1cat.) and bank 2 means the dual exhaust, (the 2nd cat. if you have 2) thats just what im thinking. not sayin its correct. i have read about 30 past posts and tons of tech info on P0420 and P0430, this seems to be happening to alot of people. they arent getting an up stream O2 sensor alarm, so the cat suffers for many miles then finally cant satisfy the post cat sensor(s). and eventually bites the dust. (as i understand it, theres no way to revive an aleing converter. if this is true, then maybe one day we will se OBD III systems.......... i hope not. IP: Logged |

I have a 99 camry V6 and my engine lite is on. The dealer told me i needed my front oxygen sensor changed and I did that. But know the engine lite is back on. Dealer says I need the oxygen sensor behind the cat. convertor change. Will this fix my problem or am I getting BS and how do I know if my cat. convertor is mess up. Would the dealer have told me if this was the case??? IP: Logged |

I am having the same issue with my 99' honda accord, with the check engine light and the P0420 code. I did not know about the 8year/80k mile warranty until I had 83k on the car. I replaced the HO2 sensor upstream of the cat and the light came back on. However, I reset the computer to temperarily turn the light off for a smog inspection and the car passed the emissions test very easy but failed the funtional MIL/Check engine light test. It takes 3 succesfule warm-up/cool downs to erase out of computer. I would think that would indicate the cat is still ok. Maybe its the HO2 sensor down stream Cat. Any answers out there? I will post something if I figure it out in the mean-time.

CAMRY had other CAT.... They called front pipe. When that code pop up, you have to clean EGR system and erase code first, if it pop up again replace front pipe. That is secondairy catalytic converter. will sold the problem. IP: Logged |
