I have the 3.8L engine and the "Check Engine" light came on. Had a mechanic pull the codes up and they are Bank 1 running lean and Bank 2 running lean (P0171) and (p0174). Anybody know what is common to both banks? Thanks IP: Logged |

Intake manifold gaskets are a fairly common cause for this. IP: Logged |

I have a 1999 Ford Mustang V6 with the same problems and I just put on a Cold Air Intake and I had the vaccume tube that comes from the valve cover disconnected from the intake plenum and I believe that may be my problem and also I believe the codes are related to the intake part of the vaccum and fuel section of the motor. I've got the fix for this. You need to replace the upper and lower plenum gaskets. You'll also need new compression bolts. Took me about an hour and a half, and it's very easy. You will need to clear your OBD codes with a reader or you can snatch the battery cable. My next door neighbor used to work at Ford and told me what to do. I've scanned the exploded view of the engine with the part numbers and quantity you need. Check it out here-> home.earthlink.net/~cswanda/jpeg/windstar.jpg Good luck and pass this jpeg around the 'net. I've been reading forums for months trying to figure it out, without paying Ford to fix it. Chris IP: Logged |

i have recently had similar codes appear on my 01 3.8 windstar. p0171, left bank running lean. my boss scanned it for me and kinda pointed me in a direction, but ive come on here for reasurance. i am prepared to change the intake manifold gaskets. do i really need to change the compression bolts? are these something to replace because your already at them when replacing the gaskets? is there a way to tell if they will be ok to be reused? its not my van, its my fathers. so to be honest im not 100% sure if it is the intake mani gaskets, but after finding out that this is a common thing for the 3.8l to have, i thing that would be a good place to start. is there anyway to test that the gasket is fooked before i go ahead and replace? From what I've been told, yes due to the fact that these are an issue also. Plus since you are there anyway ![]() Here's another site explaining the process. IP: Logged |

It looks like I need to do this for my 99 3.8. What is it about the valve cover? Can I modify it some how rather than buy a new one? quote: IP: Logged |

Replaced fuel filter and cleaned Mass Air Flow Sensor with no fix. Was succesfull with the replacement of the port seals and isolator bolts. It is easier to do with the cowl removed. (www.leckemby.net/windstar/windstar01.html) was a big help. Thanks big guy. Cost me 8.58 for the fuel filter,11.22 for the gasket set and 45.60 for the isolator bolt kit plus tax. Less than $70.00 for all the parts(w/discounts)and took me about 2.5 hours doing it at a leisurely pace. Good luck. [This message has been edited by NVRBYAFD (edited 03-06-2007).] IP: Logged |
